The Shedding Light on Hunger program is a food collection and distribution program started several years ago to help our local food banks keep their shelves filled. Over 15% of the households in our counties are considered food insecure with over 6% experiencing very low food security.
How does it work?
Members swap out their non-perishable food items for highly efficient LED bulbs. Our members have kept the collection barrels full with their generous donations. Together, we have delivered thousands of pounds of food to local food banks. The food banks help distribute the donated items to local individuals and families. Donated items must not be damaged or expired.
In 2017 we expanded the program to address food insecurity in our cooperative's service territory with a golf tournament. Proceeds from this annual event will benefit the cooperative's Shedding Light on Hunger program.
